Oil weight is a term used to describe the viscosity of an oil, which means how well it flows at a specific temperature. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) assigns a viscosity number, or weight, to oil based on its flow at 210 degrees F, which is roughly the standard operating temperature for most motors. Oil life percentage is one of those readouts on a modern automobile that isn’t always so easy to understand. From a big picture perspective, it represents the amount of time left before the oil in your engine no longer offers optimal protection of its internal components. The way this is calculated is fascinating. Multi-weight oils (such as 10W-30) are a new invention made possible by adding polymers to oil. The polymers allow the oil to have different weights at different temperatures. The first number indicates the viscosity of the oil at a cold temperature, while the second number indicates the viscosity at operating temperature. The first number of the two has a "W" following it. This indicates the Winter or cold start viscosity of the oil (though some mistakenly think the "W" stands for "weight"). Originally this denoted the viscosity of oil when it is measured at 0degF. In general The higher the code, the newer the oil. It is generally OK to use a higher letter, however, some oils had detergents while others didn't. If you have an older vehicle that was not designed to handle detergents (to reduce deposits) it may be harmeful to add an oil with detergent in it.

SAE J306 defines the gear oil grades differently, and therefore higher number oils, like 75W-140, does not imply it is more viscous than motor oil because they are on different scales! Polytron MTC is premixed with 10W-30; one of the most common motor oil to mix efficiently with your main oil.

Polytron MTC is premixed with 10W-30; one of the most common motor oil to mix efficiently with your main oil. The FC-W spec imposes a higher minimum viscosity level, which means that FC-W oil will not thin out as much as automotive oil of the same viscosity under the same heat and rpm conditions. The second issue addressed by the FC-W standard is corrosion. Looking for the definition of FCW? Find out what is the full meaning of FCW on Abbreviations.com! The basic standard for four-stroke marine engine oil is the FC-W (four-stroke cycle, water-cooled) certification, which was approved by the National Marine Manufacturers Association Oil Certification Committee in 2004. The FC-W rating was developed by the NMMA, not Yamaha, or as a means to monopolize oil sales. It's testing standards were developed to address the specific needs of marine engines, for the benefit of the consumer. Consumers can use FC-W oils in marine applications with absolute positive confidence that their oil is up to the maximum task. The most important thing here is that you need to run an FC-W rated oil in your outboard. One of the biggest difference between standard motor oil and outboard oil is that standard oil is formulated to run at a much higher temperature in order to keep it from building moisture. The oil and gas industry uses many acronyms and abbreviations.. This list is meant for indicative purposes only and should not be relied upon for anything but general information.
