A trade surplus occurs when the result of the above calculation is positive. A trade surplus represents a net inflow of domestic currency from foreign markets. A positive balance is a surplus, and a negative balance is a trade deficit. A trade surplus indicates that there is more demand for the exports of a country than there is demand for foreign products and services. There is therefore a higher employment rate within the country and the standard of living is increased. A trade surplus is a positive net balance of trade, and a trade deficit is a negative net balance of trade. Due to the balance of trade being explicitly added to the calculation of the nation's gross domestic product using the expenditure method of calculating gross domestic product (i.e. GDP), trade surpluses are contributions and trade deficits are "drags" upon their nation's GDP.

As Harvard’s Martin Feldstein explains, the reason for the deficit can be boiled down to the United States as a whole spending more money than it makes, which results in a current account deficit. Trade surpluses are enabled by (and perhaps caused by) investment deficits. Unless the money supply is changing (usually causing price inflation) money coming in and money going out must balance (not every day, nor even every year, but over time). Trade is just one way in which money flows in or out. The U.S. trade deficit is the result of a net inflow of capitalto the United States from the rest of the world.
