What happens to my shares during a reverse stock split

The company declares a reverse stock split that reduces the number of shareholders of record. In a reverse stock split, the company typically gives shareholders a single new share in exchange for a block—10, 100, or even 1,000 shares—of the old shares. Apple shares are going to split 7 to 1 on the close of business this Friday. Is this good or bad news for Apple shareholders? I thought I’d republish this post that explains how stock splits (and reverse stock splits) work to help shed some light on this upcoming event.
